Sons Of Anarchy

Last night was a great episode – tight writing, believable acting (without over-acting, which would be really easy to do with a series like this) and some real heartfelt moments that didn’t seem forced…I’m loving it.
I love how the Opie story line is taking shape, and can’t wait to see where it goes from here. Also, I loved that they used the Two Gallants song “Fly Low Carrion Crow” – it’s the song that plays when Piney is at his house and holding the gun in his hand…such a great ‘Americana’ tune that fits the show perfectly. Real life Friday Night Lights-style documentary

Anybody else hear ever see the show Head to Head? It's a documentary series following two rival high school football teams in Mississippi, very Friday Night Lights-esque. Unless you live in the area you can only watch the episodes online, (and for some dumb reason on cell phone company's site) but I was able to extract the video and put it up so you don't have to go thru their website... http://displacedbrett.wordpress.com/2009/09/12/are-you-ready-for-some- football/

The coaches of both the teams are pretty fascinating guys, and it has surprisingly high production values for being kind of an obscure little docu-series. They were smart enough to obviously copy some ideas from Friday Night Lights - it's set in small, southern towns where high school football is god, they focus on very charismatic coaches, and they even use music that's very similar to Explosions in the Sky....check out the song “Enchanted Hill” by The Album Leaf (starts at the beginning of Part 2 in the video link above, or the embedded video below)...gave me goose bumps.

Anybody else into this at all?

Michael Cera in Youth In Revolt = George Michael Bluth

Thought I'd share with you guys the trailer for Youth In Revolt, which stars Michael Cera as a character that's remarkably similar to that of George Michael...even more so IMO than in Superbad. Still, the movie looks pretty funny, makes me wish we still had our Bluths. Other things of note : it's hilarious to see Cera with a mustache. I've seen this trailer probably 20 times and it still cracks me up. Also, the song at the end, "Timebomb" by Old 97's is a great tune.

Treeless Mountain

A Korean indie drama that follows two young girls who are left by their mother (who goes searching for their estranged father). The girls are sent to live with various, incompetent relatives such as an alcoholic aunt and out on the farm with their grandparents. Writer/Director So Yong Kim does an excellent job of establishing intimacy by using a lot of close up shots on the faces of the two very expressive young actors. Though this film is obviously shot on a low budget, it has excellent cinematography, thanks to Kim's sharply focused aesthetic vision.

My initial thoughts when I heard about this movie was that it would be an overly sentimental tear-jerker, but that turned out not to be the case at all. In fact, if there is a knock on this film, it may be that it lacks strong enough conflict to really resonate. However, to me the movie is a lot like the song used in the its trailer, "Layers" by Asobi Seksu - it's beauty comes from its understatement.
